It's a song I first heard by Judy Collins, back in the 60s. Written by Ian Tyson, who also wrote Four Strong Winds, and who for those two songs alone deserves to be considered one of his generations greatest songwriters, it is one of those near-perfect story-songs. Collins sang it beautifully, of course, Also recorded over the years by country singers Skeeter Davis, Tanya Tucker, and Chrystal Gayle, in my opinion the two best versions are by Ian and Sylvia (Tyson and his then-wife) and by Bogguss.
Guy singers also took a stab at this one, including Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, and Moe Bandy, but they just don't quite cut it.
