52 Days and Counting

I'm going to come right out and say it: I don't think this is a "Flight 93" election.

Neither was the last one. Neither will the next one be.

I could be wrong, of course. Sooner or later, maybe the sky does sort-of-kind-of fall, and Chicken Little then makes the rounds of the talk shows, touting his new book, The Clucking Prophet.

But all kidding aside, what I'm not saying is that there's nothing to worry about.

Some of my Facebook friends say that any criticism of Trump is automatically dismissed because it obviously comes from people suffering from TDS and is a lie of the MSM. As an alternative, she frequently shares media reports from Internet sources associated with Q-Anon.

I have another Facebook friend who recently said that if anyone he knows harbors even the slightest support for the president, he cannot be their friend any longer.

Virtually every issue this country faces is presented as a binary choice, and the cost of choosing wrongly, each side loudly avers, is the end of civilization as we know it.

Meanwhile, people talk about coups, or about insipient revolutions. Mutual trust is spent and gone. Trust in American institutions, gone. It appears that we're all radicals now, and that is something I do worry about.
