It seems that if we are to support the right to protest, then we are to condone everything that happens in the course of a protest. Say a small percentage of protesters turn violent. Say at the same time as there are peaceful protesters in the streets, there are looters as well. It seems that we must look the other way. To acknowledge the obvious would align us with the racists and fascists.
Me, I don't like looting and destruction. I don't like mobs. It's just a thing I have. I'm not arguing that it's widespread, or that it's all perpetrated by one side of the political spectrum. And I am not arguing that its existence should drive us into the arms of the law-and-order Trump campaign. But I am arguing that there is a madness in the land. If politics can blind us to this, then that is a measure of the inadequacy of politics to guide our thinking about the world around us.
If the violence (however much or little there actually is) might seem to hurt one contestant in the current election, his opponent will tend to exaggerate its prevalence, while the other will tend to play it down. That is what we see happening now.
Word is that Biden is going to make a major address on the topic tomorrow.
